UPDATE: PSG have now confimed that Marco Verratti needs surgery and will miss Euro 2016.

In agreement with Paris Saint-Germain, Marco Verratti has decided to undergo surgery to heal the groin problem that has he has been suffering from for several weeks.

The operation will take place in Doha on 16 May at the Aspetar Centre - the club's official medical partner. The midfielder, who recently extended his contract with the capital club until 2020, is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks.

As a result, Marco Verratti will play no part in Paris Saint-Germain's final matches of the season, or Euro 2016, to be held in France between 10 June and 10 July. Paris Saint-Germain wishes the player a speedy recovery and hopes he will soon be fully fit and back to his best for both club and country.

After Vincent Kompany suffered another cruel injury setback during the week, Ireland's chances of qualifying for the knockout phase of Euro 2016 have been given another boost following reports that have emerged in Italy this morning.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport are reporting that PSG and Italy midfielder Marco Verratti's recovery from a groin injury has not gone as well as hoped and that there is a good chance he will miss Euro 2016.

The report claims that Verratti has just a 30% chance of making the tournament, and should he not see significant improvement in the coming weeks then he will need surgery to ensure that he is fully fit for next season.

Coupled with the news that Claudio Marchisio will definitely not travel to France due to injury, this makes very bad reading for fans of Italy as their two best midfielders could be unavailable.

At this point the biggest indication of whether or not Verratti will be ready for the tournament is if he is passed fit for the Coupe de France final, which takes place on Saturday, May 21. At the moment it seems unlikely that Verratti will play any part, but the PSG medical team are believed to be taking best efforts to ensure that he avoids surgery.

Should Verratti miss the Euros, then Italy's likely midfield partnership would be Daniele De Rossi and Andrea Pirlo.

The news has understandably not gone down well with Italian fans:
