Ireland international James McClean is set to re-join Wigan, according to a report in the Irish Independent this afternoon.

The Irish winger has had an unhappy few months at Stoke City, culminating in him being sent to train with the club's U23 side.

That revelation came during a press conference last week that saw his manager Michael O'Neill confirm that he was not only for sale, but also no longer with his first-team squad

"James is part of the U23s," the Stoke boss said.

"He's available to other clubs but as yet no club has taken up that option as far as I understand."

And it now appears that a club has taken up that option to sign McClean from Stoke.

The Derry native only has a year left on his current deal at the club. And it appears that all indications suggest that his services are no longer required.

This opened the door for Wigan to secure his signature, and it looks like they have achieved that.

McClean has played with the Latics before following a spell with Sunderland.

While at the club, the now 32-year-old made 79 appearances between 2013 and 2015.

During his first season with the Tics, he helped them reach the Championship playoffs.

Although, his next season at the club proved to be disastrous as they suffered relegation to League One.

McClean would then leave Wigan to join West Brom before later joining Stoke City.

Wigan's fortunes have improved in recent months after they were bought by new owners.

Their manager Leam Richardson, who was formerly the assistant to former Sligo Rovers boss Paul Cook, is assembling a squad that is aiming for promotion back to the Championship.

As per the report in the Irish Independent, McClean is set to be in attendance at Wigan's game tonight against Wycombe Wanderers as he looks all but set to make his Wigan return.
