Combined XI's are all the rage in modern football media as they are an interesting way to generate debate and discussion before a big game.

The also inevitably infuriate both sets of fans which is amusing considering the fact that it's a team that exists only in the mind of whoever was tasked with picking it.

That man ahead of what promises to be a cracking Merseyside derby is Jamie Carragher in this instance, as the Daily Mail asked him to decide which player wins the position battle in a 4-3-3.

The final result was six Liverpool players to Everton's five, but Nathanial Clyne was given the nod at right back as Seamus Coleman will not be available for some time, but had the Killybegs man been fit, Carragher may well have picked more Evertonians.

It seems reasonable enough, assuming that Adam Lallana was also omitted due to injury.

The learnings to take away from it are the following:

-There are no good goalkeepers on Merseyside.
-A front three of Mane/Lukaku/Coutinho would be absolute carnage.
-Idrissa Gueye is going to have to do a hell of a lot of defending for Barkley and Coutinho.

But, again, none of this really matters because it's a fictional XI from the mind of Jamie Carragher.
