Carragher Reveals Unhappy Instagram Message From Lionel Messi After MNF Comments
By Gary Connaughton

Lionel Messi has absolutely nothing left to prove in football, although it is fair to say that his time with PSG has not gone all that well.

Arriving in Paris to a huger amount of fanfare, the Argentine superstar has managed only six goals in all competitions up to this point in the campaign.

Despite this, he has continued to pick up a number of honours in recent weeks. He recently won yet another Ballon d'Or as well as being included in the FIFPRO Team of the Year.

He also made the FIFA 22 Team of the Year, a side that included a couple of odds choices. It certainly seemed to be heavily influenced by what players are the most enjoyable to use in the game itself, with five PSG players included.

Jamie Carragher picked his own version of the team last night on Sky Sports, but could not find any room for Lionel Messi. He instead opted for Mo Salah in the front three.

He wondered if this would anger the 34-year old, revealing that Messi had actually messaged him on Instagram earlier this season after comments Carragher made about his transfer to PSG on Monday Night Football.

No Messi (in his team). We had that debate at the start of the season about Ronaldo or Messi, I was a Messi man...

He's not happy with me at all. I had a little pop at Ronaldo earlier in the season when I said I didn't think it was a great signing for United, I said the example of Messi, I didn't think Messi was a great signing for PSG. It was on Monday Night Football.

I got a private message on Instagram from the man himself (Messi). I will not be showing private messages, but he basically called me a donkey.

He watches Monday Night Football and hopefully he is watching Friday Night Football as well, because Lionel I absolutely love you, you're the greatest player of all time and compared to you I was a donkey, I accept that, but you're not getting in this team.

You haven't played well enough, even if you won the Copa America in the summer. It's not enough to leave my man Mo Salah out of the team.

Even at this stage of his career, it seems Messi is not ready to easily brush off any unfavourable comments made about him.

It will be interesting to hear if he returns to Carragher's DMs after this team selection...
