Jeff Hendrick Troubles Continue After Major Snub From Loan Club

When Jeff Hendrick first broke into the Ireland team, quite a few supporters were excited about what he could become over the years that followed.

The Dubliner was certainly an exciting midfield prospect, with his performances at Euro 2016 as a 24-year old particularly impressive. Having earned a £10.5million move to Burnley off the back of that tournament, it was expected that he would only continue to improve from that point onwards.

However, his career since then has not quite gone to plan.

Hendrick was a regular in the Burnley side for a number of years under Sean Dyche, although there was a sense that he never quite developed into the player many expected him to become. He certainly lost some of the creativity he showed as a younger player, being turned into a utility winger at Turf Moor.

A free transfer to Newcastle would follow in 2020, although it did not take long before their supporters also turned on him. He has since spent time on loan at various Championship clubs.

Jeff Hendrick remained an Ireland regular throughout this period, with the player currently having 79 caps to his name. In saying that, he was often criticised for a lack of impact, especially under Mick McCarthy and Stephen Kenny.

Now 32-years old, his career hit a new low in recent days.

Jeff Hendrick suffers major snub from loan club

Jeff Hendrick joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan at the start of the season, although the move has not been a success.

While he was included in the starting XI quite a bit in the early parts of the campaign, his playing time has dipped off dramatically since then. He has not started a league game since October and has not even made the bench since December 2nd.

He would feature in the club's FA Cup fourth round replay loss to Coventry City last week, but that looks set to be his last appearance of the campaign.

Hendrick has now been left out of the club's 25-man squad list for the remainder of the Championship season.

Speaking on that decision, Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl said that the Irishman has remained 'professional' despite the decision.

He [Hendrick] played some minutes in the cup which was good. There is learning also from my side that you have an FA Cup list and a [separate] league list.

We have seven loans and so we have to make decisions. This is part of the reason why. He's still involved and I think maybe when I look to the next 15 games it could be he's helpful. He has trained, he's professional. All of my players have taken the situation.

This is not normal, when I compare to my stations before, you have players who are disappointed and they show this. But my group is fantastic, it's outstanding what they are doing.

Jeff Hendrick could theoretically be added back into the squad list later in the campaign, although that looks very unlikely barring an injury crisis at the club.

His contract at Newcastle expires at the end of the season, at which point his rumoured £50,000 per-week wages will finally come off the books. He made 25 Premier League appearances in the four seasons since his signing.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up next, although it seems likely that Hendrick's days as an Ireland international are now behind him.
