There have been many whispers of Roy Keane returning to management over the past few years but the Irishman has now gone over five years without working as a coach.
The Manchester United legend enjoyed mixed results across managerial spells with Sunderland and Ipswich before teaming up with Martin O'Neill to guide Ireland to Euro 2016. However, since his and O'Neill's doomed spell at Nottingham Forest in 2019, Keane has focused mostly on punditry work.
We are now at the stage of the Premier League season when clubs become more cut-throat with their managers and, as is tradition, Keane is thrown out as a potential option for managerless clubs despite his time out of the game.
This weekend saw two top-flight managers fall, as Wolves' Gary O'Neil and Southampton's Russell Martin were both sacked with their clubs languishing in the relegation zone.
Southampton have managed just one win all season and sit on just five points. It is a dire state of affairs at St. Mary's and a replacement for Martin is needed urgently.
One Saints fan called in to talkSPORT this week to suggest Roy Keane as a potential successor - and host Jeff Stelling delivered a brutal retort.

Jeff Stelling had witty response to Roy Keane - Southampton suggestion
On the books at Southampton is England international Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who scored on his debut against Ireland last month.
Notably, Harwood-Bellis is soon to be Roy Keane's son-in-law, as he is engaged to Keane's daughter Leah.
When a caller to talkSPORT suggested Keane as a potential new manager at Southampton, host Jeff Stelling brutally shot down the idea with a brilliant quip about Keane's future son-in-law.
I think you’re gonna have to get Taylor Harwood-Bellis to use his influence if you’re gonna get Roy Keane! I’ll be brutally honest.
It is unlikely that Keane will be considered for the role at Southampton, and the Irishman is not listed among the bookies' favourites for the job.
When Harwood-Bellis scored against Ireland in November, Keane delivered an even better cutting one-liner about his soon-to-be family.
Host Mark Pougatch clarified the connection between Harwood-Bellis and Keane, explaining that the England star was to marry Keane's daughter. Keane responded:
Yeah it's not done and dusted yet. Things can change very quickly in the Keane household let me tell you.
You can only imagine how intimidating it would be to have Roy Keane as both a father-in-law and a manager.
