An Unnecessary Photo Tribute To John Aldridge's Moustache

I recently rediscovered one of the great Irish sports photos of all time. It's a snap of John Aldridge celebrating after scoring this goal against Portugal in a Euro 96 qualifier.

There's much to love about the pic; the Aldridge celebration, the head of hair on Couto  - not to mention his complete look of despondence - and of course John Sheridan looking about 50 but still delighted with life.

However I've overlooked one other aspect. That moustache. That wonderful moustache.

It started its life in black and white and with a barnet to boot

And loved a two-armed goal celebration

Italia 90 ... USA 94 ... matches against Denmark ... the moustache has seen it all

Sometimes it was happy

Sometimes it was sad

Sometimes it got too warm

Even when up against a team of national hunt jockeys, the moustache reigned supreme

All hail John Aldridge's moustache - the source of Ireland's 1990s success
