John Egan is good enough to play in the Premier League.

We saw during his two seasons with Sheffield United in the English top flight that he was more than capable of holding his own in the English top flight. As a result, it is a surprise that no club in the division has pulled off a move for the Cork man over the last couple of summers.

Egan has continued to impress at Bramall Lane, taking the captain's armband for the majority of this season as The Blades sit top of the Championship.

As a result, a number of teams have been keeping an eye on his progress.

He was linked with a late move to Leeds United during the recent transfer window, although a deal would not materialise. However, it looks as though another Premier League club is already lining up a January bid for his services.

West Ham linked with January move for John Egan

The Sun are reporting that West Ham are already lining up a winter move for John Egan, with the club set to test Sheffield United's resolve with a £12million bid for the Irishman.

David Moyes was apparently keen to sign the player this summer, although the Championship side showed little interest in selling him. It remains to be seen if their stance will change in the months ahead.

If Sheffield United are still in the thick of the automatic promotion race, they would likely think twice about selling the lynchpin of their defence. In saying that, it would also be an opportunity to recoup a sizeable fee for a player who will turn 30-years old next month.

A return to the Premier League would surely appeal to Egan, who has only spent a couple of campaigns at that level up to this point in his career.

Ireland boss Stephen Kenny would likely welcome the move, as long as the defender continued to play regularly. West Ham would represent a sizeable step up, with European football also likely to be on offer in the second half of the campaign.

It would be a great move for John Egan, although how keen Sheffield United would be for it to happen remains very much in doubt.
