Despite Liverpool having experienced remarkable success over the last couple of seasons, their supporters were hoping to see some additions to the squad this summer.

The club were strongly linked with a move for Timo Werner, but ultimately decided against matching the financial package on offer from Chelsea. The only singing thus far has ben backup left back Konstantinos Tsimikas, with rumours linking them with Thiago Alcantara yet to come to fruition.

It seems that Liverpool's financial power has been heavily affected by the coronavirus, although some of their supporters would point out that they also spent very little money last season.

The lack of spending has been even more pronounced when you consider the spending spree currently taking place in London. Chelsea have already signed Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, and Malang Sarr this summer, with further recruits likely on the way.

Speaking to BBC, Jurgen Klopp said that his club could never spend in the manner of some clubs with wealthy benefactors.

For some clubs it seems to be less important how uncertain the future is because they are owned by countries, owned by oligarchs, and that is the truth.

We are a different kind of club, it was always the same. We reached the Champions League final two years ago, won it the following year and won the Premier League by being the club we are, by beaing leaded the way we are.

We cannot change overnight and  say 'now we want to behave like Chelsea'.

They've signed a lot of players, that can be an advantage for them. But it also means they've got to fit together pretty quick as well...

We always want to improve the squad but there are different ways - one way is to sign new players and the other way is to work together, improve the things you were good in and try to nullify the things you are not good in.

That is football. No-one wants to talk about training and only about signings.

Liverpool will get their Premier League title defence underway on Saturday evening when newly promoted Leeds United make the trip to Anfield.
