Football Leaks are busy once again, today prising into the open details surrounding Philippe Coutinho's long-mooted transfer to Barcelona. Working with German newspaper Der Spiegel, email correspondence between Barcelona and Liverpool over the transfer has been leaked, revealing the value of the offers along with Coutinho's prospective wages at the Camp Nou.
Barca made three bids for the Brazilian, the first of which stood at £72million. Liverpool rejected the bid, stating that Coutinho was not for sale at any price. This didn't deter Barca, and they emailed a second offer of around £90 million for Coutinho in early August. This was once again rejected by Michael Edwards, Liverpool's Sporting Director, along with an added message:
I ask you amicably to stop harassing Coutinho publicly and privately. No amount of money will change our minds.
Barcelona didn't take the message, and a third offer arrived near the end of August. This was considerably higher: a £114million offer that would have made Coutinho the second-most expensive player in history. That was rejected by Liverpool, and Barca ended up making Ousmane Dembele pricier than everyone bar Neymar.
Coutinho would have earned a pretty penny at the Camp Nou. The leaked documents also include a prospective Barca contract for Coutinho, and shows that he would have earned €115m across five years. In terms of pay scale, this would have put Coutinho behind Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta, and Lionel Messi, but ahead of his former Liverpool teammate Luis Suarez.
