Lee Carsley played 40 times for the Republic of Ireland, but he's widely regarded in The FA.

The Birmingham-born midfielder has been given a high-profile role with England's Under-21 team, as the side look to continue on the successful summer it's underage teams had.

Carsley is the new assistant manager of the team,  having previously worked with manager Aidy Boothroyd in the England Under-19s team.

His title with the team is 'National Specialist Coach', but he will remain in his day-to-day role at Birmingham City. The 43-year-old is the 'Head Professional Development Coach' at The Championship club.

Carsley previously worked with the likes of Coventry City, Sheffield United and Manchester City, before joining his hometown team.

Speaking to Birmingham's official website, he was delighted to rejoin The FA in a new capacity.

This (appointment) gives me a better idea of the standard of players out there. Obviously we are trying to produce Premier League/Championship players ourselves. And to see what the best look like gives me a real gauge on what more we need to do with our players.

A lot of the England team is the team I worked with when I was last there, with the Under-19s, so it will be good to see a lot of old faces and the way some of them have progressed in the last year-and-a-half is outstanding.

I am really fortunate to be given this chance and I appreciate that the FA wanted me back.

Carsley never represented England at any level, but the English hierarchy have seen how talented he seems to be. The chances of a former Ireland international managing the English senior team seem slim.
