Sometimes you wondering if Mick McCarthy considers his job as Ipswich Town as more of a humanitarian role.

He loves nothing more than picking up an unemployed Irish footballer.

In recent years, he acquired the services of Stephen Hunt, Noel Hunt, Paddy Kenny and Kevin Foley.

After the unexpected exit of Daryl Murphy over the weekend, McCarthy would appear to have replaced him with another Irish striker - Leon Best.

The 29-year-old was signed as a free agent after leaving Rotherham during the summer.

Best enjoyed a mini-revival at the Championship club last season - one which saw speculation he might get a call-up to the Ireland squad ahead of the Euros. In a four week period between March and April, he hit five goals in five games.

McCarthy signed Best after he scored in a trial game for Ipswich U23s last week.
