We are all well aware of Manchester United's track record in the transfer market at this stage. The club have been an absolute disaster when it comes to recruitment for almost a decade now, repeatedly wasting vast sums of money on subpar signings.
There were hopes that this was about to change. The arrival of Erik ten Hag as manager ushered in a new era for the club and it was thought that some restructuring at board level could help with their transfer business.
That has not proven to be the case. United have struggled to get players in the door thus summer, with Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, and a very high-priced Lisandro Martínez the only signings so far.
The club are said to be close to agreeing a deal to buy French midfielder Adrien Rabiot from Juventus, but not everyone is impressed by that move.
Lou Macari slams potential Adrien Rabiot signing
Adrien Rabiot could generously be described as an inconsistent player, looking good at times only to go on long runs of poor form. His move to Juventus has been an underwhelming one, failing to nail down a place in Turin since arriving in 2019.
It had been said that the Italian giants were keen to offload him this summer, so they were surely thrilled to accept a bid of around £15million from Manchester United.
The signing reeks of desperation from the English club, who have spent most of the window chasing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to no avail. The fact that this move was left until mid-August would suggest that it was not exactly a pre-planned deal.
Former Manchester United midfielder Lou Macari certainly isn't convinced by the potential signing. Appearing on MUTV, a TV station that is essentially a public relations vehicle for the club, he went off script by slamming the deal to bring Adrien Rabiot to Old Trafford.
It was a remarkable watch as he went against the club line on the issue.

What's his name? Rabiot, right. I had never heard of him...
I can't see his qualities. Qualities you can see in black and white, scoring goals, or in his case not scoring goals.
Football clubs spend millions and millions of pounds to put scouts out there all around Europe and keep their eye on all the players.
No one has made a move for this fella! Why? Nobody has made a move for him...
All the clubs in this country that have done well in the transfer market, why aren't they interested in him? Why aren't Man City and Liverpool interested? You always need a good player...
I have got a bad feeling about the guy.
The presenter trying to convince Macari that he is a quality player by saying Monaco were also interested is peak MUTV.
It is an opinion that held by many supporters of the club, most of whom continue to be bewildered by the club's approach in the transfer market.
Lou Macari goes off script when asked about Rabiot on MUTV: "I'd never really heard of him. Clubs spend millions of pounds scouting players across Europe, but nobody else has made a move for this fella. Why do you think this is? I have got a bad feeling about the guy." #mufc

Is is expected that the deal to bring Adrien Rabiot to the club is nearing completion, although there have apparently been some issues over his wage demands.
While this transfer hasn't even been confirmed yet, it already has the whiff of one Manchester United will be regretting in the not too distant future.
