Manchester United fans were happy with aspects of the club's transfer business over the summer, although it is fair to say that they left it late to get some deals over the lines.

After signing Mason Mount right at the start of the window, they would leave it until late July before bringing in Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. Sofyan Amrabat, who the club had been chasing for months, would only arrive on deadline day.

Both Amrabat and Hojlund also arrived short on fitness, meaning they did not have much time to bed in before being thrown into competitive action.

There has been quite a bit of intrigue around the signing of the Danish striker. He comes to Old Trafford as a relative unknown among the general football fan, with one season at Atalanta his only experience in a top-five European league.

Having scored nine goals in Serie A, it was enough to convinced Manchester United to fork out a fee worth up £72million to bring him to the club. As it turns out, they also made a move for another highly rated young forward.

Manchester United made bid for Evan Ferguson last summer

ESPN are reporting that Manchester United made a bid to sign Brighton and Ireland striker Evan Ferguson during the summer, submitting an offer of £50million for the 18-year old. However, it is said that the bid was 'laughed off' by the player's current club.

United would then go on to sign Rasmus Hojlund instead.

The Irishman is one of the most highly rated prospects in world football, with his hat-trick against Newcastle a couple of weeks ago truly announcing his arrival on the global stage. He has been tracked by the top English clubs for a number of years, dating back to his time at St Kevin's.

It has been suggested that he will be sold for well over £100million at some point over the coming seasons, meaning Brighton were never going to accept a bid worth half that amount this past summer. In any case, staying at the Amex for another couple of years would seem like the most sensible move for the player himself.

A £50million move to Old Trafford was never on the cards, even if it would have smashed the £23million Irish transfer record that was set by Nathan Collins' move to Brentford a few months ago.
