Amad Diallo scored his first-ever senior hat-trick as he pulled Manchester United from the fire in their 3-1 victory over Southampton on Thursday night.

United had every reason to be optimistic, having impressed against league leaders Liverpool in a 2-2 draw before knocking title contenders Arsenal out of the FA Cup.

Southampton, meanwhile, were reeling from a 5-0 humiliation at home to Brentford last time out having lost their last three matches to remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

However it was all about the underdogs from minute one, spurning numerous chances to go ahead with Andre Onana making a string of fine saves.

Alejandro Garnacho put a good chance wide, before Onana was called into action again to make a stunning double-save.

Southampton would get their deserved lead through an Ugarte own goal, prompting jeers to ring out around the ground.

United upped their tempo with the introduction of Antony in the second-half but the Brazilian missed an absolute sitter to get his side back level after he was set-up by Garnacho.

Again it was Diallo who performed the escape act, finding the net after some persistent play just as he did against Man City and Liverpool. Zirkzee, who had a big impact from the bench, played a big role in the lead-up to Diallo's finish.

The club's new golden boy was involved again in the 90th minute with an exquisite finish and Southampton would return to type as he secured his first-ever senior hat-trick with the clock in the red.

Paul Scholes gave scathing take on Man United despite comeback win

Club legend Paul Scholes was on punditry duty for TNT Sports at Old Trafford when he gave a sobering assessment of what he had seen from his former side.

Asked if he was no longer despondent off the back off the win, Scholes was not in any mood to go along with the narrative.

No, not really," he responded when asked if belief had been restored.

For 80 minutes that is as bad a performance as you'll ever see especially against a team bottom of the league.

I have to give Southampton credit, they are bottom of the league but they were so much better than Man United. The way they passed the ball, technically and tactically. That is probably why they are bottom of the league, because they can't put teams away.

Manchester United, Diallo was the one bright spark. I think the manager will still be disappointed with that performance.

Against, as I said, a team who have really struggled to score and they concede goals all the time.

I know Diallo has come and produced the win... he is the only one player who can take any credit out of this game tonight.

It is hard to disagree with Scholes off the back of the performance United had put in prior to Diallo's equaliser.

That said, the result should continue United's recent momentum as they look to surge up the Premier League table into more familiar territory.
