Marco Van Basten seemed to be far from happy with the Netherlands performance in their 3-1 over the USA.

While it was far from a classic, Louis Van Gal's side were the better team as they took control of the game in the first half thanks to goals from Daley Blind and Memphis Depay to give them a 2-0 lead at the interval.

The USA had chances throughout the game, with Holland goalkeeper Andries Noppert making a vital save from Christian Pulisic, who was their most dangerous players.

The most bizarre goal of the tournament from Haji Wright gave the USA hope, but Denzel Dumfies goal nine minutes from time sealed victory for Holland, with the winners of Argentina and Australia waiting for them in the quarters.

While they have advanced to the next stage, Marco Van Basten was far from impressed with their performance. Having been part of classic Dutch sides known for their attractive football, Marco Van Basten can be forgiven for wanting more entertainment to be provided on the pitch by his country.

Speaking on a pundit on Dutch channel NOS after the game, the former Holland midfielder didn't hold back is his criticism of their style of play in the game.

"Two great goals, the rest is something to cry about. As a football lover, I asked myself, 'what am I looking at? Zero initiative.

If this is something we have to be proud about, if we win the World Cup everybody will be happy. But I don't know if I can cope with this much longer. We all started playing football because we find it fun, right?

I can't imagine these players enjoying themselves."

Louis Van Gaal developed a reputation of his side's being defensively solid and well organised to get results, that has got him to where is now.

While his style of football has often been criticised, especially at Manchester United, it has got him results and silverware no matter where he has managed.
