Manchester United fans have grown tired of the club's players taking to social media to apologise for poor performances. They were no doubt expecting such apologies to be shared in the aftermath of Tuesday's dire defeat to Atletico Madrid. The apology Marcus Rashford tweeted on Wednesday, however, had nothing to do with the game itself.

Rashford took to Twitter to clarify what happened during a verbal altercation with a fan outside Old Trafford on Tuesday night, and denied showing said fan the middle finger.

Marcus Rashford: Out of sorts United player apologises for incident with fan

It is safe to say Marcus Rashford is currently performing well below his potential for Manchester United. The English forward has followed two 20+ goal seasons with easily his worst campaign in Manchester red, and was again out of sorts when brought off the bench against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

United would ultimately crash out of the Champions League at the last 16 phase after a 1-0 loss at Old Trafford.

After the game, a section of fans outside the stadium heckled Rashford and his teammates as they made their way to the team bus. One video shared to social media seemed to show Rashford being riled up by a group of the supporters, and turning towards them before being stopped by stewards.

The incident as a whole seems innocuous enough, but Rashford was compelled to take to Twitter to clarify what had happened.

In a Tweet posted on Wednesday evening, Rashford said:

A video can paint a thousand words and in this case lead to inaccurate info being shared on social media. [...]

I had been heckled from the minute I stepped foot outside the ground, abuse not just aimed at my football.

People were looking for a reaction from me. Phones were at the ready. Of course I should have walked straight past and ignored it, that's what we're supposed to do right?

I want to clarify 2 things. The first being what I actually said to the man throwing abuse at me which [was] "come over here and say it to my face"

Secondly, the fact I used my forefinger to direct the fan to 'come over and say it to my face.' I did not gesture with my middle finger. I'm not entitled. This isn't ego.

I'm upset. I'm disappointed. And in that moment it was silly but I was being human.

The fact that a fan favourite like Marcus Rashford is clarifying a falling out with a section of fans shows how bad the situation is at Manchester United.

The club are now left without any chance of silverware for a fifth consecutive season, and the much dreaded "inquests" will be churned out once again over the coming weeks.

If Rashford can regain some of the form of the previous two seasons, it would go a long way to helping with the club's issues.
