Cambridge United have signed Shane O'Neill on loan from Cypriot side Apollon Limassol.

O'Neill is the son of two-time All-Ireland winner with Cork Colm O'Neill and the nephew of Kerry legend Maurice Fitzgerald.

O'Neill made the somewhat strange move to Cyprus last August after having spent six years with MLS team Colorado Rapids.

The 22-year-old was born in Cork, Middleton to be exact, but his family moved to the US when he was young.

Cambridge boss Shaun Derry called the move 'a little bit left-field'.

It’s a great opportunity for Shane to ply his trade in England and we’ll have the chance to work with an exciting, young international footballer.

Shane’s arrival at the football club has been a little bit left-field. We wanted to look a little outside the box. Having had a connection with his agent in America, Shane’s name popped up to us at the eleventh hour.

O'Neill's father Colm was part of the Cork team which won successive All-Ireland football titles in 1989 and 1990. His mother is Maurice Fitzgerald's sister. So his sporting family tree is certainly impressive.

He has represented the US at both U20 and U23 levels, though is still eligible to represent Ireland.

He joins a Cambridge side currently 11th in League Two but they are just three points outside the playoff places.
