Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi is has had a breathtaking 2015 so far. The player widely considered to be the best of all time has enjoyed a purple patch of form and just last weekend completed the treble with Barcelona, so it's understandable that Messi is in great form as he prepares to try and win the 2015 Copa America with his national team.

He was certainly in a good mood when he was asked about other players by 'Shortlist', and after rubbishing claims of a rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi was then asked what players he thought could compete with himself and the Portuguese if they were to come to La Liga, and he singled out Manchester United's Wayne Rooney for particular praise:

If you look at the technical ability of a player like Wayne Rooney, he is as good as any player in Europe. Rooney has exceptional quality. Not just great technical ability, but also works very hard for his team. I'm sure Manchester United will never want to let him leave, though.

As good as any player in Europe, that is high praise indeed.

Louis Van Gaal is expected to bring a striker in to Old Trafford this season in order to take some of the goalscoring burden away from Wayne Rooney, who has also been deployed in several other positions during his time at United, but Messi reckons if he were to move to La Liga that he would be in the running for the Pichichi.

What do you think, would Rooney suit La Liga?
