Arsenal Link With Move For Man Utd Player Sure To Infuriate Their Fans

Arsenal's options in defensive midfield have been a weak link for many years.

Most recently, Francis Coquelin has proven himself to be an adequate choice for Arsene Wenger. It's tough to extricate yourself from the feeling that despite the 24-year-old being capable, he is not the player who can fill the role long term and aid Arsenal in their pursuit of trophies.

Mikel Arteta and possibly Mathieu Flamini are likely to depart the club during the summer, leaving Arsene Wenger even more shorn of options to shield his defence.

Wenger has long been accused of too often settling for Tesco brand rather than the premium option. During January, approximately £7 million was spent of Mohamed Elneny. Obviously, there's a chance the Egyptian could be the solution but that is yet to be ascertained.

No doubt, Arsenal fans will be hoping Wenger uses the cash reserves at his disposal to bolster the midfield with some quality. However, the Daily Mirror has a rumour which may make them think otherwise.

Michael Carrick, out of contract with Manchester United during the summer, has been linked with a move to the Emirates. Given his recent struggles with fitness, some might cite him as being the perfect signing for Arsene Wenger.

Carrick will be 35 by the time next season begins. Perhaps the Arsenal manager believes the midfielder still has something to offer or maybe he simply requires someone to keep Jack Wilshere company in the treatment room.
