Of all the moments to sum up a disastrous performance from Manchester United against Bournemouth yesterday, the one late on involving Bruno Fernandes might well have been the most apt.

With his team 3-0 down in the final ten minutes, he picked up a yellow card for dissent. While this would not be the biggest issue in normal circumstances, that booking will now rule him out of their game against Liverpool at Anfield next weekend.

Hardly the example you want your captain to set.

Some have already suggested that Fernandes might not be all that upset by the prospect of missing the trip to Merseyside, and while that seems harsh, the incident does highlight an issue with his character.

Bruno Fernandes was appointed as Manchester United captain by Erik ten Hag, but it is fair to say that not everyone is convinced that he is suitable for the role. Roy Keane said as much recently.

For someone who it the leader of a team, the way he acts when things are going against him is not something that reflects well on the midfielder. He also consistently berates referees, something a captain should play no part in.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Michael Owen said the Bournemouth yellow card summed up a big issue in the psyche of Bruno Fernandes.

I wonder how many yellow cards he’s had for dissent and waving his arms about. Possibly you don’t fancy going to Anfield - I wouldn’t at the moment...

I’m not sure you’re thinking of the next game when you’re in the thick of playing but he should be responsible; he should be a good ambassador and a leader for the team.

We all know referees are clamping down on that and he gets booked an awful lot for a player who hardly puts his foot in and tackles. Really, he gets booked an awful lot.

Manchester United will need Bruno Fernandes to get back to his best if they are to get out of this current rut, starting with Tuesday's game against Bayern Munich. A victory is needed in that one if they are to have any chance of advancing to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

He will need to keep a more level head if the is to play his part in getting the team back on track.
