Mick McCarthy Not Happy With 'Outrageous' Spending In The Championship

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy was on BBC Radio Suffolk this morning commenting on the spending of Championship clubs this summer.

The Tractor Boys have brought in five new recruits this summer, two players have been brought in on loan, Bersant Celina from Man City and Dominic Iorfa from Wolves, while they also spent £935,000 on striker Joe Garner from Rangers.

However, Middlesbrough who were relegated from the Premier League last season, have spent upwards of £30 million on new recruits, and Wolves have smashed their transfer record for the second time in 2017 when they splashed £15 million on Porto midfielder Ruben Neves.

The former Republic of Ireland manager does not see how this kind of spending can be sustained in the long run.

I am not complaining but I just do not know how it can be sustained.

I think it is outrageous - but don't get me wrong if I had it, I would spend it.

I get Middlesbrough signing their players because of the parachute payments. Bristol City spent £5m on a striker [Famara Diedhiou] and Wolves spent £15m on a holding midfield player for heaven's sake - they already have a £13m [Helder Costa, signed in January].

Although, McCarthy does seem to contradict himself by saying, 'If I had it, I would spend it,' it seems logical that this kind of spending in the Championship is unsustainable as both Wolves and Bristol finished in the bottom half of the table last season.

Ipswich fans were questioning McCarthy as their manager last season but he has been working on a shoe string budget ever since he took over the club and with the kind of spending that has been mentioned, it would seem he is doing a fairly solid job at Portman Road.
