Penalty shoot-outs, is there a more dramatic thing in all of sport?

It is one of the few things in this world you can't bare to watch and also can't take you eyes off. Even the most mundane of shoot-outs tend to have some element of drama, but every so often we are blessed with one that is truly insane.

AC Milan were involved in one recently, but this effort from the MLS tops it.

Orlando City and New York City met in the Eastern Conference play-offs last night, with the game going to penalties after it finished 1-1 at the end of extra time.

The shoot-out was fairly standard until near the end, with Orlando goalkeeper Pedro Gallese thinking he had won it for his side after saving New York's City's fifth spot kick.

However, it was then established that Gallese had come off his line in the process, getting booked for the infringement. Having been given a yellow card earlier in the game he would be sent off.

Orlando then bizarrely tried to bring on a substitute in the middle of the shoot-out, which is not allowed. As a result, one of their defenders had to go in goals. You can probably guess what happened next.

You can watch it in all it glory below, featuring a miss from Nani that would have sealed the result.

Incredible.

This is reminiscent of the shoot-out between Ireland and The Netherlands in the U17 Euros back in 2018, with Ireland goalkeeper Jimmy Corcoran being sent off in similar circumstances. Unfortunately, Ireland would come out on a losing side on that occasion.
