Even if it is a relatively meaningless game, the UEFA Super Cup is one of the longest standing traditions in European football.

It offers clubs the opportunity to get their season off in a promising fashion by lifting some silverware. Of course, even reaching the fixture is incredibly difficult due to the fact that you have to win the Champions League or Europa League to even reach it.

With UEFA always looking to increase revenue streams, it won't come as a surprise to learn that they are looking to introduce an extended edition of the competition in the near future. What's more, it's set to include teams from outside Europe.

An article in The Guardian is reporting that UEFA is hoping to introduce a new four-team Super Cup in the future, one that will likely take place in the United States.

It will still feature the Champions League and Europa League winners, with the winners of the newly introduced Europa Conference League also included. The fourth team would feature a club from the host nation, most likely to be the MLS champions were it to take place across the Atlantic.

This new tournament could be introduced as soon as 2024, with the aim being that it will bring extra revenue and a new audience to European football.

There have been some suggestions that UEFA will also look to play some Champions League fixtures outside of Europe during the extended group stage format, although the report suggests that this is not currently under consideration.

While the addition of the Europa Conference League is some form makes sense, the idea of including the MLS champions and moving the fixture to America is sure to cause a huge amount of debate.
