Neil Warnock took charge of Aberdeen for the first time since his unexpected move to Scotland last night, falling to a 2-1 defeat against Rangers at Ibrox.

It was a close game, one that went right down to the wire. The home side took the lead in the seventh minute of the match through Rabbi Matondo, only for Bojan Miovski to equalise for the visitors just before the interval.

A 72nd minute strike from Todd Cantwell would prove to be the difference between the sides, with Aberdeen unable to find an equaliser despite a later red card given to Dujon Sterling.

The result moves Rangers level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, while Aberdeen have dropped down to ninth in the table.

Neil Warnock calls out Rangers ballboys after Aberdeen loss

Neil Warnock was an unexpected appointment at Pittodrie, with the 75-year old being brought in on a deal until the end of the season after Barry Robson was sacked last week.

Speaking after the game, Warnock said that while he enjoyed it, he questioned some of the time wasting from the Ibrox ball boys as his side chased an equaliser during the closing stages of the contest.

It was my type of game that. My type of atmosphere. When you get the ball boys wasting time at the end in the last 10 minutes you know you're doing well, don't you?

They must be coached very well, are they coached with the first team? They throw it back when they are losing and when they are winning they hide the ball under their jumpers.

I didn't think you did that at this level. That was a new one for me that.

Aberdeen will be hoping that the appointment of Neil Warnock can help move the club up the table, having gone on a barren run of form in recent weeks.

They currently sit five points above the relegation play-off position.
