Neil Warnock has criticised Robbie Brady's agent the players's decision to leave Burnley in the summer, despite an offer of a new contract reportedly on the table.

The Middlesbrough manager was asked about potentially bringing in a number of free agents, including Brady, before Saturday's 2-0 defeat away to Hull City. In fact, Warnock didn't name a seventh sub on the bench for the game due to a lack of squad depth.

When asked about the Republic of Ireland international, the 72-year-old admitted he was an admirer of Brady but remarkably hit out at the player's agent for the decision not to keep the player at Burnley.

The winger spent over four years with the Premier League side but an injury disrupted his final year and Brady was released as a free agent in the summer.

The expectation was the 29-year-old would get a move before the end of the transfer window - with Championship clubs and Celtic linked with his signature - but that failed to materialise.

“I didn’t see us linked with him, if I’m honest," Warnock told TeesideLive when asked about Brady.

Robbie Brady is a tremendous left-sided player with stacks of ability. I was surprised when he left Burnley. In fact, I think he was offered a new contract, so I’m not sure his agent has got it right for him.

“We are looking for that type of player on that side, out of contract. But you’ve got to be so careful because players like that won’t have been involved in any training with a squad and they’ll be behind. They’ll be training on their own.

“It’s all right looking, but unless the right one comes along, we’ll have to just muck on with what we’ve got.”

Middlesbrough currently lie 15th in the Championship table after Saturday's defeat, just four points above the relegation zone after 11 games.
