Newcastle Could Be About To Re-Introduce Their Iconic 90s Shirt Sponsor

Newcastle fans have made it perfectly clear how little they think of Mike Ashley and his running of the club in recent years, but the club's association with 'WONGA', the British money-lender and another of the Newcastle owner's companies, was a particularly unpopular decision.

In fact, it has upset the fans so much that he has agreed to cut the deal short, and Newcastle will be looking for a new sponsor to be displayed the front of the jerseys they hope to be seeing in the Premier League next season.

And Ashley is clearly trying to get the fans back on side, as the Sunday Mirror have reported [via ChronicleLive.co.uk] that the club are pursuing a deal that would see Newcastle Brown Ale back on the front of the jerseys.

Of course, sponsors on the front of jerseys are not something that everybody likes (just ask Johnny Giles) and rarely does it is very rare that the sponsor actually improves the look of the jersey... But that was said about the classic Newcastle jerseys of the 90s.

It appears as though the only stumbling block is with Heineken, who own Newcastle Brown Ale.

Newcastle United have been in talks with Newcastle Brown Ale about becoming the club’s main sponsor again - according to the Sunday Mirror.

The Mirror report that United had attempted to resurrect one of the club’s most popular shirt sponsor deals but the Magpies have been unable to agree a deal with Brown Ale’s owners Heineken.

It means that Newcastle are still looking for a new sponsor for next season with their £9million deal with Wonga about to expire.

Were the deal to get done and the jersey to feature the iconic beer logo on the front, it would no doubt fly off the shelves on Tyneside.

Ahead of last season an artist mocked up what each Premier League team's jersey would look like if they used the club's least offensive sponsorship logos, and Newcastle's admittedly looked fantastic.
