Heading into this month, it was obvious that Newcastle's Premier League survival hopes were likely to depend heavily on the business they managed to conduct in the January transfer window.

Their squad is well short on quality, with their suddenly deep pockets meaning they had the opportunity to upgrade in a number of areas. Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have already been brought through the door and they are unlikely to be the only arrivals.

A number of other players had been linked in recent weeks, with one Euro 2020 star now apparently on their list.

Sky Italy are reporting that Newcastle are interested in signing Robin Gosens this month, the Atalanta man who was one of the breakout stars of Euro 2020 last summer in German colours.

Gosens put in a number of excellent performances over the course of the tournament in a left wingback role, leading to links to some of the biggest clubs in Europe at the time.

Ultimately the move did not materialise, with the 27-year old having not actually played since September due to a serious muscle injury. Despite this, a number of clubs remain interested in his services.

Newcastle are chief amongst them, with the report suggesting that they are willing to triple Gosens' current pay package to around €3.5million after tax per year.

His current fitness issues aside, this would be a superb signing for the club. Gosens is the calibre of name that their supporters would have expected them to go for, with the player due to return from his injury next month.

Newcastle entered this weekend with only one league win under their belt this season, meaning that any reinforcements will be needed as soon as possible in order to boost their survival hopes.
