Norwich City turned down an offer from a club to make Andrew Omobamidele to the most expensive Irish footballer ever.

The central defender has had a mixed season for the Canaries, one that has seen him dominate games as the captain, and weeks that have seen him sat on the sidelines with injury.

In a recent wide-ranging 50 minute interview with Norwich's sporting director Stuart Webber, he discussed an offer that was made for Omobamidele halfway through the season.

Webber didn't name the club who made the offer, but he did reveal that they offered more money than the club got for Ben Godfrey, who moved to Everton for £20 million.

Andrew Omobamidele set for Norwich exit

He said: "We turned down an offer in January for Andrew Omobamidele which was bigger than what we sold Ben Godfrey for.

"We're fortunate as a club that how we've run it, how we've tried to run it, is to make sure that we don't have a gun against our head. Sometimes we choose to sell the player, because it's the right thing maybe to reinvest in the squad.

“So I think theirs is a big possibility he could go in this window, if I’m honest. Do we want him to? No. But it will get to a point where if it helps us do other stuff at the club, and also if it’s right for the player.

“The one in January actually wasn’t right for us and probably wasn’t quite right for him as well at that time when I spoke to him and about him. It was a foreign club."

He concluded: “If we start here on September 1 with Andrew, I’d be very surprised and very happy.”

While it's unclear which club made the offer that would have made Omobamidele the most expensive Irish player ever (Nathan Collins is currently in the top spot at £20 million), he has been linked with some massive clubs in recent weeks.

A number of Premier League sides are keeping tabs on the defender, while Italian giants and Champions League semi-finalists AC Milan are also reportedly interested.

Webber seemingly confirmed in the interview that Omobamidele will be leaving the club this summer, so it will be interesting to see who snaps up the talented youngster.
