Irish Politician Hits Out At RTÉ's Premier League Favouritism

It's not often we cover what get's said in the Seanad but yesterday there was something rather interesting brought up by Fianna Fáil Senator Paschal Mooney. The Leitrim based senator has issued a call for RTÉ to change the order of their sports bulletin because it gives undue favour to the Premier League results.

Mooney was specifically speaking in relation to RTÉ television and, in particular the weekend sports bulletin. The Senator stated his belief that at these times, Irish sporting results are pushed down the agenda in favour of the Premier League and, women's sport tends to miss out entirely.

To back that up he gave the example of the absence of any mention of the Connacht senior ladies’ football final between Kilkerrin-Clonberne of Co Galway and Kiltubrid, Co Leitrim last weekend. Instead he pointed to the presence of all the action from across the water at the top of the bulletin.

While commending RTÉ Radio's policy, Mooney accepted that the Premier League should be covered but not at the expense of Irish sport.

I do not suggest they should not be given, but they were given first, followed by all of the domestic sports results, excluding the result of the women’s football game.

In a week where RTÉ's loss of the Premier League highlights package has been brought up once again, it's certainly interesting to see what kind of reaction Senator Mooney's complaints will draw from the sporting public and from RTÉ themselves.
