Upon his arrival at Manchester United, Erik ten Hag's main task over the next year or so will be overhauling the first team squad.

The Dutchman has probably already identified a number of possible targets that the club could pursue this summer, while he also has to decide what current players will be worth keeping around.

It is likely that ten Hag will use the early portion of pre-season to help him decide on any potential outgoings, although he will not be granted that opportunity with some members of the squad.

The likes of Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, and Jesse Lingard are all out of contract this summer, with it being expected that all four will move on. However, Paul Scholes is of the opinion that one member of that group could be worth holding onto.

Scholes is clearly in regular contact with Jesse Lingard, even revealing on TV last week that the Englishman had told him that the current United dressing room is a mess.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said that ten Hag could opt to keep Lingard on the book as he is the type of player that could suit his playing style, although the midfielder will of course have the final say in the matter. He also said that he had been in contact with the player since accidentally revealing details of their private conversation.

I’ve had a little bit of stick for that. I don’t know why I did it! Honestly, sometimes words just come out your mouth.

I have spoken to him since and probably best I don’t tell you what he said...

I think Jesse has been treated pretty poorly by the club, to be honest. He was ready to sign for Newcastle at one point and West Ham, right at the end of deadline day and he was told he was going to get more minutes.

That clearly hasn’t happened. He’s deserved a chance. We all saw what he did at West Ham. He’s a really good footballer and can bring goals to a team and with this team playing so poorly as well, for him not to get a chance… I think he’s unfairly treated.

I think he might suit him [Ten Hag] and he might want to keep him. We will see what happens. It’s obvious he never wants to leave Manchester United, and if this manager wants him then why wouldn’t he stay?

It remains to be seen if Erik ten Hag would indeed be interested in hanging on to Lingard. At 29-years old, he has never really nailed down a place in the team and it would surely benefit his career to play consistent football elsewhere.

One thing we do know for certain is that the new manager will have plenty of big decisions to make this summer.
