Both Porto and Bayer Leverkusen had disallowed goals in their Champions League tie in Portugal due to VAR.

In a must win game for both sides of Group B, VAR once again the centre of attention in Porto's 2-0 victory, a result that could be vital come the end of the group stages.

In one of the most open groups in the Champions League, it was Porto who claimed a vital three points through second half goals from Mehdi Taremi and Zaidu Sanusi giving them the victory.

Porto thought they had taken the lead when Taremi finished off a swift counter attack in the 42nd minute.

However, after Porto’s players were finished celebrating, the referee was still dealing with the appeals from the Bayer Leverkusen players for handball at the other end of the pitch.

After a lengthy VAR review, the referee ruled out Porto’s goal and awarded a penalty to the German side. However, Bayer Leverkusen couldn’t take advantage, with Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa saving Patrick Schick’s penalty.

It was a difficult night for Leverkusen and referring decisions, with winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is currently on loan from Chelsea, having a goal ruled early in the first half for a harsh foul in the build up.

In a group where three teams are all equal on three points, tonight's refereeing decisions had the potential to have an major impact on the final standings in the group.

The Champions League surprise packages of the season Club Brugge, caused another huge upset as they defeated Atletico Madrid 2-0.

The Belgian side sit top of the group with three straight wins in three games, as they look set to qualify for the knockout stages at the expense of a top european side.
