Andre Onana's woeful start to life at Manchester United continued on Saturday, as the Cameroonian keeper was yet again at fault for Brentford's opener at Old Trafford.

Brentford had not won at Old Trafford since 1937 before Saturday but for the vast majority of the game it looked as though that record was about to change, as Mathias Jensen's first-half goal stood as the only goal until deep into injury-time, before a dramatic double from Scott McTominay snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

That opener from Jensen came after a littany of defensive errors from United, as Casemiro gave the ball away in midfield before a bungled clearance from Victor Lindelof left the ball for Jensen to shoot.

The final error was the most egregious, however, and it once again came from United's shot stopper, as Onana let the ball trickle into the net, despite managing to get a fumbled touch on it.

Peter Schmeichel questions approach of Andre Onana after latest Manchester United mistake

Recommended

It was yet another error for Andre Onana since his big-money move to Old Trafford this summer.

He was lucky not to give away a penalty against Wolves on his debut, and errors in the opening two Champions League games against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray contributed to the club losing their first two games in the competition for the first time ever.

Reacting to Onana's error for Brentford's opener on Saturday, United legend Peter Schmeichel questioned a specific element of the goalkeeper's approach.

Schmeichel said that he did not understand how Onana set himself as opposition players prepared to shoot, saying that it left him one step behind as he was setting his stance too high:

My theory here is that he's just lifting up, he's not set enough. His arm is coming up to go down.

As a goalkeeper, the practice is that you learn to dive along the ground for the ball, you don't go up to come down. We saw the same mistake against Bayern Munich, I noticed the same thing. He just lifts himself instead of diving and moving towards the ball.

Don't ask me [why he's doing it], I'm not Onana! I don't know.

I think a lot of it is pressure. I spoke to him after Bayern, I spoke to him after Galatasaray...he's very down on the mistakes that he has made.

I'm trying to speak to him about what it's like to play for Manchester United. Whatever mistake you've made, you have to put it in a box immediately, and put it to one side. If you make a mistake in a game...you wait to think about it and analyse it until after the game. You have to be there for the next moment. If you don't, you'll make the next mistake.

Onana will be thanking his lucky stars that his teammates managed to turn things around late in the day against Brentford.

With the score still at 1-0 to the Bees deep into injury-time, substitute Scott McTominay scored an astonishing double in the 93rd and 97th minutes to clinch a crucial victory for United - their first at Old Trafford in the league since August.

Despite United's eventual win, the scrutiny on Andre Onana is only set to multiply, and he will be grateful for a spell away from the pressure of the Premier League during the upcoming international break.
