Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick believes the club is "six years" behind Liverpool in terms of their development as a team. At Anfield on Tuesday night, Liverpool hammered United 4-0, moving them top of the Premier League table.

"It's embarrassing, it's completely disappointing, in a way also humiliating," Rangnick told beIN Sports.

"We have to accept Liverpool are six years ahead of us.

"When you compare that squad that Liverpool has to the one Jurgen Klopp inherited when he came six years ago... At the end of his first season, they finished eighth, had a point average of 1.6. This is roughly where we are right now with our current team.

"This team needs to be rebuilt, it's clear. A game like the one today showed that even in a drastic way that this rebuild is necessary."

In the post-match press conference, Rangnick said that he felt the Manchester United players have not mentally checked out this season.

"It's just a different level," he said.

"Liverpool have better players than we have, if you look at it in total.

"This is what was reflected by the result today. There will be a rebuild, for sure. It was clear for me that when I came in December, and after the first three or four weeks.

"If you analyse the situation, and it's not that difficult to analyse. The team needs a rebuild. Not because some players have to go, but because some players have no contracts anymore.

"For me, it is clear there will be six, seven, eight, maybe ten new players. Before you sign those players you need to be aware how you want to play. What kind of football does the new manager want to play? Take it from there, and bring every single player fitting into that profile.
