Regardless of how the last few weeks of the season play out, it has to be accepted that Liverpool have enjoyed a remarkable campaign.

With three games left to go, they have already surpassed their record Premier League point total and are in with a fantastic chance of ending their 29-year title drought. There is also the small matter of the Champions League semi final with Barcelona to contend with.

While their current squad is well stacked, an extra bit of star power could never hurt. According to a report today, that is exactly what Jurgen Klopp is looking to add this summer.

The Daily Mail are reporting that Liverpool have made contact with Lille over a potential deal for Nicolas Pepe. The 23-year old has been in sensational form this season, netting 19 goals to go along with 11 assists.

He has been the main catalyst as Lille look set to secure second spot in Ligue 1 and a return to the Champions League. Operating mainly from the right flank, his ability to drift inside and make things happen in the final third have been invaluable for his side.

The player has been linked with most of the top European clubs, with a rumoured price tag of around £70million. Chelsea were believed to be the most keen, but Liverpool are apparently the first interested party to contact his club directly.

While Lille would no doubt like to hang onto the Ivorian for their return to the continent's premier club competition, that sort of money would be difficult to turn down.

Liverpool's current front three of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané is amongst the most deadly in world football, but their reserves leave something to be desired. Xherdan Shaqiri has fallen out of favour after a decent start to life at Anfield, while Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge are not up to the required standard.

There is also the possibility that all four could fit into the team. Roberto Firmino played in a deeper role at times earlier in the campaign, with Mo Salah playing through the middle. That is likely something we could see more of next season were Pepe to arrive, especially against some of the weaker clubs.

They will have a battle on their hands to secure his signature, but this is the type of player Liverpool need to aim for if they are to sustain their return to football's elite.
