Former Dundalk man Richie Towell is making his return to the League of Ireland later this season, as Shamrock Rovers today confirmed they had signed the midfielder.

Towell played under Stephen Kenny at Dundalk for three seasons from 2012 to 2015, winning two Airtricity League titles in 2014 and 2015. He then moved across the water to Brighton, but only made one appearance in their 2016-17 promotion campaign. He never got a taste of Premier League football with the Seagulls, as he was restricted to cup appearances and two years on loan at Rotherham.

Towell has spent the last two years at Salford City, the club owned by David Beckham, Gary Neville, and co. from the Manchester United 'Class of 92'. When fit, Towell has been a regular starter for the club, and has scored 3 goals in 23 league appearances this season.

Shamrock Rovers confirm that midfielder Richie Towell has signed for the club and will join the squad in a few weeks to prepare for match action when he is registered to play for Rovers (from July 1st 2021).

Towell will be eligible to play for Rovers from the 1st of July - with eagle-eyed Irish fans noting that their next game after that date is at home against Dundalk on the 2nd, meaning Towell could well make his debut for the Hoops against his former club.

The Independent are reporting that Shamrock Rovers have offered Towell a three-and-a-half-year contract, taking the 29-year-old through to the end of 2024 with the club. Rovers currently sit five points clear at the top of the table and the acquisition of Towell will only boost fan's hopes of retaining the Airtricity League title for the first time in 10 years.
