Watch: Robbie Keane Opens Up On International Retirement And His Pride In The Green Jersey

Robbie Keane was on Goals on Sunday today and was undoubtedly one of the better guests they've had on the show in recent memory (obvious bias aside). The way Keano chatted about the games on display and the relaxed demeanour with which he gave his opinion on Wayne Rooney, Andy Carroll and other topics suggested that he could make a fine pundit when he hangs up his boots, if he decides not to immediately move into coaching (which he has said he would like to try after he finishes playing).

One of the things Keane talked about on the show was his Ireland career. It's hard to watch Keane speak about playing for Ireland and not well up (even slightly, and even if you're not prepared to admit it to yourself).

For me, the most pride I've had over the years is putting that green jersey on. No question about that. It (international retirement) was a difficult decision for me of course, certainly for the family, but I think it's a decision that was at the right time for me.

(It's) a good opportunity for the younger players. Of course the last year was a little bit different in terms of my role in the team, but I enjoyed absolutely every minute of it.

It's difficult, that last game was a little bit strange, playing with all your family there and knowing that's the last time you'll put that green jersey on again.

Special memories.

Perhaps understandably for a man who adored representing his country so much, Keane wasn't immediately and totally final when Ben Shephard broached the subject of an international return.

You get the sense Keane still isn't fully over his international retirement - but then again he probably never will be.
