Taking his place in the BBC studio for tonight's '606' call-in show, Robbie Savage found himself in the bizarre position of having to defend Brighton & Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton.

The former Irish international has worked wonders with the club in recent seasons. Getting the club promoted to the Premier League for the first time in 2017, he guided the largely unfancied club to a 15th placed finish; seven points clear of the relegated trio.

This time out, even today's defeat to Everton didn't take away from the fact that Brighton find themselves sitting 12th in the league, as many points away from the relegation zone as they are the top 4.

Yet, for some football fans, this isn't apparently good enough, not what a club like Brighton ought to be satisfied with.

"Is it time for Chris Hughton to step aside at Brighton in favour of someone who is a little more willing to attack?"

Such was the question Savage was faced with. Needless to say, he didn't quite agree with the sentiments of the esteemed caller.

Robbie Savage: Are you a Brighton fan?

Caller: I am a Brighton fan ya.

Robbie Savage: Wow.

Running through some of the positive aspects of what Hughton has engineered at Brighton, the fan in question nevertheless thought life could be a little bit better without their current manager in place.

Robbie Savage wasn't having it.

Wow. You've made an arguement, but Wow.

To say Chris Hughton should step aside, you are 12th in the Premier League after staying up last season, you've got 14 points, and I would suspect the wage budget is one of the lowest in the Premier League.

As a Brighton fan ... I think, in all my years of 606, I've got to say that is one of the worst shouts I've ever heard.

In nine years of doing this show, when you've got a man in Chris Hughton who got you promoted [and stayed there] ... nine years of doing this show, I think that is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard in my life.

You can watch a perplexed Robbie Savage respond to this fan's wish below.
