It hasn't taken long for Chiedozie Ogbene to burst into life this season.

After having a stellar 2021/22 campaign in which he established himself in the Ireland team and helped Rotherham to the EFL Trophy and League One promotion, he is already making his mark in recent weeks.

The winger has scored in each of his three appearances this season, twice in the Championship and once in the League Cup. His goal on Saturday was an excellent one, providing a perfect example of the damage he is capable of doing in the final third.

It is clear that Ogbene is more than capable of having a huge impact in the Championship this season, although it remains to be seen if he will do so at Rotherham.

Rotherham United boss unsure on Chiedozie Ogbene future

Chiedozie Ogbene has been heavily linked with a move away from the club this summer, with Swansea City rumoured to be interested in his services. The Ireland international has less than 12 months remaining on his current contract and has shown little interest in signing a new deal

Speaking to the Rotherham Adviser, Rotherham boss Paul Warne admitted that it was looking increasingly unlikely that Ogbene would pen a new deal. He also said that while he would prefer to keep him in the squad this season, his hand may be forced if an acceptable bid arrives for the player.

Things have gone cold, we are not negotiating as we speak. We obviously want to re-sign Chieo, that goes without saying. He knows that.

We are going to revisit it when we have done all our business in the window. In the middle of a window with the season just starting, it is not at the top of my agenda.

We have reached out to his representatives and hopefully it is something we can do...

I think the player is going into the final year of his contract and seeing what happens. It is hard to persuade people otherwise when they have got something in their head that they would like to do.

It is my job to get Chieo to perform on a weekly basis and that is my focus. What more can I do? I can’t get him in a headlock. If he doesn’t want to sign a deal, he won’t sign a deal...

It doesn’t help the team out if I sell him. I appreciate it helps the club out, but fortunately the chairman wants to keep all of our best players.

It’s a moot point at the moment because we haven’t had a bid, although I appreciate that could change in a heartbeat.

At 25-years old, Chiedozie Ogbene is now entering the prime. He is more than good enough to play in the Championship, with a move to a club a bit higher up the division seeming like a logical step at this point in his career.

This is one to keep an eye on in the weeks ahead.
