Roy Keane Ripped Into 'Weak' West Ham Star For Role In Controversial Villa Winner

In typical Roy Keane fashion, the Irishman had a very different read of Aston Villa's controversial FA Cup winner against West Ham on Friday night.

The Hammers travelled to Villa Park under the stewardship of Graham Potter for the first time. The Englishman was appointed midweek, taking over from Julen Lopetegui with West Ham struggling for any semblance of form in the Premier League.

The early signs under Potter were bright, and West Ham stormed into a first-half lead when Lucas Paquetá scored after just nine minutes.

The visitors held onto their lead for over an hour, before two goals in five minutes from Villa turned the tie on its head. First Amadou Onana and then Morgan Rogers scored to put the hosts in front, and they would hold onto their lead to progress to the fourth round.

The equaliser from Onana was highly controversial. The midfielder prodded home from close range after a goalmouth scramble - but the chance came from a corner that should never have been awarded.

Onana's wayward shot had breezed over the heads of the West Ham defenders but, inexplicably, referee Tim Robinson awarded Villa a corner, from which Onana would eventually equalise.

The West Ham players protested the call vociferously, and fans and pundits were outraged by the bizarre call which arguably cost the Hammers a place in the fourth round.

Predictably, Roy Keane was uninterested in that debate, instead focusing on the antics of West Ham's goalscorer Paquetá in the buildup to the goal.

Roy Keane unimpressed by Lucas Paquetá antics v Aston Villa

As the ball came out to Ian Maatsen from the corner, Lucas Paquetá lay clutching his face on the goalline after being brushed off by Ezri Konsa.

It was a nothing incident but Paquetá made a meal of the altercation, as footballers nowadays are frustratingly want to do.

His antics did not impress Roy Keane in the ITV studio, with the Irishman going in on the Brazilian for not committing to his side's defensive effort.

You know what? There were a lot of players going down too easy tonight. But that's nothing.

To go down and then stay down when your team are trying to defend a set piece? Not good enough.

Look at that, it's really weak.

Watching the incident back, West Ham fans might have been inclined to agree with Roy Keane's scathing assessment of Paquetá's theatrics. He was certainly not alone in playing up 'injuries' at Villa Park but his attitude while West Ham were defending a lead will not have impressed fans.

Aston Villa will learn their fourth round opponents on Sunday evening, with the draw to take place on BBC One after Arsenal's clash with Manchester United.
