When it came to their performances in the Champions League this week, Roy Keane had plenty of praise for both Liverpool and Spurs.

However, viewing the wider picture of their success over the last decade, Keane felt there's much to be embarrassed about for both clubs.

On ITV's Champions League highlights show on Wednesday night, presenter Mark Pougatch asked Keane and Lee Dixon if the importance of the Champions League had reframed what should be considered as success for English clubs. Both Liverpool and Spurs have won just a single League Cup over the last decade.

"For a club, certainly the size of Liverpool and Tottenham, one trophy in ten years is pretty embarrassing," said Keane.

"I know the Champions League has took over now and the money behind it, but to be successful at the clubs you just mentioned is about getting your hands on trophies, absolutely."

Keane said that taking into the consideration the size and quality of the squads which Liverpool and Spurs both have, winning a trophy along with progression to the knockout stages of the Champions League should be their aim.

The clubs you are talking about, Liverpool and Spurs, should be able to qualify for the Champions League and win a League Cup or an FA Cup. That's what we are talking about.

The game has changed because going back to years ago when we played, you obviously had to win the league to get into the Champions League. It's now we're looking at five English teams in it.

But these clubs with these squads, you should be able to compete in the Champions League in terms of getting to the knockout stages - it's very difficult to win it, we know that - but to then win an FA Cup or a League Cup, that should go hand-in-hand.
