Roy Keane has been voted the greatest captain of the Ireland football team in a recent survey carried out by Ladbrokes.

Now seen on our tv screens every weekend, Irish fans clearly haven't forgot the impact he had on the pitch, with Roy Keane claiming 43% of the vote. Ironically he finished ahead of Mick McCarthy in second, who received 21% of the vote.

In an attempt to establish Ireland's dream five-side team, Packie Bonner received 48% of the vote as Ireland's goalkeeper, while Richard Dunne was voted the best defender with 46% of the vote.

While Roy Keane was well celebrated for his pitch displays, the jury is still out over the infamous Saipan debacle, with just over a quarter (27%) of adults believing that he was right to leave the Irish camp in Saipan in 2002 and just over a third (34%) believing it was the wrong decision.

Most Irish fans often support anyone but England in international tournaments, but it seems there is more secretive England among us than we realise.

This Ladbrokes survey had shows Wales to be the highest supported team in the competition on 6%, with Spain and Portugal on 5% each.

Speaking on the results of the survey, Ladbrokes Nicola McGeady claims the Premier clubs people support played a big impact on people’s choice of who they will be supporting in the competition.

“Given the old rivalry between our nations, the survey findings have certainly come as a shock. Obviously people want to see their favourite Premier League player do well, but we still didn’t expect England to come out on top!”

When people were asked on their favourite World Cup moment, it was the iconic ‘Hand Of God’ by Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup game against England, with 51% getting the vote.
