RTÉ Are Prepared To Surrender Some Of Their Euro 2016 Rights To TV3

RTE recently lost their Six Nations rights to TV3, and now the state broadcasters are considering sub-licensing some of their Euro 2016 games.

RTE Sport yesterday issued an invitation to all Irish broadcasters interested in accepting a sub-licence for a package of games from the Championship. RTE confirmed this with the issuing of a statement today, saying that the broadcaster were "exploring all options" in relation to the rights.

RTE have said this is merely to gauge interest, and will not be forced to sub-licence games.

While TG4 and UTV Ireland could theoretically purchase the licence, TV3 would be the most likely to buy the rights.

This decision by RTE has likely been taken with a view of lessening the financial burden of a very busy 2016, with RTE holding rights to the Euros, the GAA Championships and the Olymnpics.

The idea of Euro 2016 being on TV3 will likely upset some fans, after their head of broadcasting felt the need to respond to the numerous complaints over their coverage of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

This came shortly after a public apology to viewers for a mishap that caused those watching to miss a vital part of the action in a cracking Arsenal vs Bayern Munich group game.

Hopefully those kinks will be ironed out if they do indeed secure the rights to some Euro 2016 matches.
