Ryan Giggs - "You Couldn't Buy Roy Keane Today, He's Better Than Kante"

Roy Keane made sports headlines around the world during the week when he was in good form at a press conference before Ireland's trip to Georgia.

The former Man Utd captain was asked for his opinion on the transfer window as it has closed, when he offered the suggestion that his former teammate Ryan Giggs would be worth £2 billion in the modern market.

While that was obviously tongue in cheek, Keane was expressing his disbelief at the figures being paid for what he believes are average players and he's not alone in that view.

Ryan Giggs is one, in fact, and when he was asked about Keano's comments before Wales' crucial win over Austria on Saturday, he agreed with his former teammate although he found it too difficult to put a modern market price on a player of his calibre.

The only player he could think of to compare to Keane was Chelsea's N'Golo Kante, a player he immediately insisted the Irishman was better than.

He always spoke a lot of sense, Roy.

I don't know about £2 billion but... I think Roy's point was now you're seeing a lot of average players go for massive sums and you look back at some of the players we played with, I mean, what would they be worth now?

Ruud Van Nistelrooy, just an unbelievable goalscorer, what would he be worth when you're just guaranteed goals every season? I think that was the point Roy was making and he's right. It's just ridiculous now and it doesn't look like stopping, it looks like it's going up.

You couldn't buy him [Keane], because you look around the league... Who is like him?

Kante is obviously a fantastic player, but Roy is better than Kante.

He could do everything, Roy. When he signed from Forest he was an attacking midfielder, going box to box and getting beyond the centre forwards, scoring goals, and then he turned into a midfielder who just controlled the tempo and obviously with Scholesy was part of a fantastic midfield.

The point Giggs made about Keane arriving as an attacking midfielder and moulding his game in such a manner that he became the focal point of the Man Utd team that dominated English football at the time is one you don't hear made too often.

We've heard players like Michael Carrick make a point about Keane's passing being criminally underrated due to his physical style of play, which is also true, but not much is made about the changes Keane made to his game after some big departures saw changes needed at the club.

Some nice comments from Giggs, who by suggesting Keane was priceless actually gave a more realistic valuation that the Ireland assistant coach gave of him.
