17-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Johansson has told the FAI that he doesn't want to be involved with Irish underage teams for the moment.

Johansson was born in Luxembourg to an Irish mother - Christine McCarthy from Mullingar - and a Swedish father. He joined Bayern Munich last summer from French side Metz.

Johansson made his debut for the Ireland U19s last month, coming off the bench in a 1-0 defeat to Wales at Longford's City Calling Stadium and then starting a 2-0 win against the same side in Galway two days later.

The midfielder has previously played at underage level for Luxembourg. Ireland U19 manager Tom Mohan said that for the moment, he will continue to play for the country of his birth.

"His next switch to play competitive football would tie him with that country for life," Mohan is quoted as saying by the Irish Mirror.

"He doesn't want to make that decision so early."

Mohan - who said that the player appeared to enjoy his time with the Irish team - has spoken to Johansson's family. He is still open to the possibility of playing for Ireland. Sweden are also said to be interested.

"We'll not cut our ties with Ryan. We'll keep monitoring him and see how he's getting on and keep in touch with him.

"He doesn’t want to make a long-term commitment and you’ve got to respect those things."
