West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has made an outrageous claim about one of his players. Big Sam said that Stewart Downing is currently the best midfielder in the Premier League.
Downing has made a fantastic start to the season, scoring once in six games. West Ham are performing above expectations and are lying seventh in the table which Allardyce attributes to the influence of Downing in the centre of the park.
I don’t think there is anybody playing in midfield that is better than Stewart Downing. He was my Man of the Match against QPR. The confidence is growing again in Stewart and he’s showing his quality.
The quality of Stewart Downing was a major factor why we beat QPR. The amount of ball we can get to him in that position in midfield, in a diamond, has been fantastic for him and for us.
In a league that contains a plethora of talented midfielders such as Aaron Ramsey, Cesc Fabregas, Angel Di Maria, Yaya Toure and Eden Hazard, there's only one figure that has risen above everyone else (in the eyes of his manager). Let's all appreciate the genius that is Stewart downing.
