Samuel Eto'o has taken to Twitter to apologise after kneeing a supporter in the face at a World Cup game in Qatar.

Eto'o was involved in the "violent altercation" after Brazil's 4-1 win over South Korea in the last 16 last night.

In his tweet the former international footballer and current President of the Cameroonian Football Federation said that the other man involved in the incident was "probably an Algerian fan."

Eto'o claims he has received "relentless provocation" and "allegations of cheating" from Algerian fans since Cameroon qualified for the World Cup at their expense in March.

Algeria called for the game to be replayed at the time due to what they perceived as "scandalous" refereeing decisions.

Cameroon won the tie on away goals after winning the second leg 2-1, with the President of the Algerian Football Federation resigning following the match.

Algeria striker Islam Slimani saw two efforts ruled out, one in the second half for offside, and a second in the first half of extra-time after the referee consulted VAR and deemed there had been a handball in the build-up.

Toko Ekambi scored for Cameroon four minutes into stoppage time of the second-half extra-time.

Eto'o who is an ambassador for the World Cup was filmed confronting the man and kneeing him in the face after breaking through a number of people who were attempting to hold him back.

"I apologise to the public for this unfortunate incident.

"I pledge to continue to resist the relentless provocation and daily harassment of some Algerian supporters," Eto'o added in his statement.

"Indeed, since the Cameroon-Algeria match, I have been the target of insults and allegations of cheating without any evidence.

"During this World Cup, Cameroonian fans have been harassed and pestered by Algerians on the same subject."
