Gerard McConnell says he 'nearly fell off his stool' which he saw a substantial donation had been made from Seamus Coleman to help young cancer patient Caolan Melaugh.

Family friend McConnell, who set up a Go Fund Me page for the two-year-old, told Donegal Daily:

That is just such a wonderful thing for him to do, to think he took the time to read Caolan’s plight and to be so generous then with his money.

That will help enormously, we are all so thrilled. We’d like to thank Seamus and everyone else who donated so far from the bottom of our hearts

The Ireland captain donated €6,000 to Caolan's cause, simply leaving the message, 'Best wishes Caolan x'.

Caolan, who is from Killygordon in Donegal, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma when he was just 10-weeks-old.

For the last 15 months, he has undergone intense treatment for the condition. That has meant parents Stacey and Gerard travelling to the US with their son.

Initial medical bills, which totalled more than €200,000, were paid with the help of the local community. However, Caolan now requires further treatment.

So far, the Go Fund Me campaign has raised nearly €25,000 to help Caolan and his family.
