Duffy Shoulders Blame But Sees Positives In Ireland Peformance

Shane Duffy said that Ireland's 1-1 draw with Bulgaria in the Nations League on Thursday was "a disappointing result".

Duffy scored a 93rd minute equalising goal, making amends some sloppy defending which had led to the Bulgarian goal 10 minutes into the second half.

"It was nice to get the goal at the end but overall, a little bit disappointed with the game, the result," Duffy told Sky Sports.

"I'll probably take the blame for [the Bulgaria goal]. It was sloppy defending and I didn't get in quick enough and they punished us. I haven't played a lot of football. It was tough out there in moments for me to get going."

Despite the disappointment, the Ireland captain did see positives in the performance.

"I think we were the better team," said the centre-back.

"The chances they got were from our sloppy play, our sloppy passes. They didn't really break us down otherwise. We had a lot of possession and a few chances.

"It was important that we didn't lose the game, that's a positive, and the attitude of the lads, we kept going till the end.

"It's early days under the new manager. We've had a couple of days training and we're trying to get his ideas in. It will take a little bit of time but we'll keep trying.

"We had a lot of possession and we worked on that in the few days [we had together], trying to get our number eight higher up the pitch, our front three pressing their back four.

"They had a mid block that was hard to break through and they were waiting for our mistakes.

"It's a lot more possession based. Even when we were 1-0 down, we didn't retreat to lumping it, we kept to the style and that was positive."
