A wave of depression swept over Spain after their embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Netherlands in the holders’ World Cup opener. After years of dominance on the international stage, the heavy loss marked the end of an era. The entire Spanish population was left dejected after the match.

Well, almost everyone.

One lucky punter correctly predicted the scoreline and won a whopping €100,000 worth of fuel. Jacobo Rios-Capape, a 56 year old architect from Valencia took part in a competition organised by a Spanish fuel company and amazingly, was the only entrant in 70,000 to get the result right.

Spain were knocked out of the tournament after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Chile in their second group game. The loss also saw them go bottom of Group B, behind Oceanic minnows Australia.

Maybe Jacobo can use his prize to move to a country with a brighter future in international football? France is only a few hours drive away.
